South African wind power - delivered by BBC

The 134.4MW Amakhala Emoyeni wind farm is a greenfield renewable project currently being constructed near Bedford in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

German wind turbine manufacturing company Nordex was awarded the contract for the delivery and turnkey installation of the turbines at the wind farm. The contractual scope also included a service agreement for an initial period of ten years.

BBC Chartering was selected as dedicated project carrier to deliver the wind farm components for Nordex. Distributed over multiple shipping lots from March to August 2015, a global transport solution had to be provided for the shipment of 56 turbines (each 2.4 MW) from the European continent, the corresponding number of wind blades from Turkey, and the tower segments from Indonesia to Coega port, South Africa.

The project’s overall procurement plan, required to assign various heavy lift vessels in the timeframe from March through August. BBC Chartering procured the heavy lift vessels BBC Moonstone, BBC Citrine, BBC Maryland, BBC Alabama, BBC Steinwall, and the BBC Rosario to transport the turbines, 168 rotor blades, and 50 tower segments. The project demonstrated again BBC Chartering’s ability to provide the required trading capacity and perform according to the customer’s project plan.
