The port of San Antonio enjoys effective hinterland connections. It is connected to Chile’s road network through two routes, and also has dedicated access to the country’s rail network. Now, as part of their concession planning, the two major terminal operators STI and Puerto Central continue to invest into expanding their cargo handling capacities. For that matter, a number of additional gantry cranes (RTGs) were purchased just recently in order to upgrade the STI terminal.

The BBC Spring, a 166 meter long heavy lift vessel delivered four RTG units from Phu My, Vietnam to the STI port of San Antonio. Each RTG weighed about 200mt and was loaded using the vessel’s own cranes that are able to lift up to 800mt. With dual lift operations, each RTG was swung through the vessel’s crane window and got moved on deck to its respective position.
