Heavy port handling equipment for Rio Grande, Brazil

February 2015 – The most Southern port in Brazil, the Port of Rio Grande, is known for its performance in terms of productivity and offering fast and quality ship handling services. Equipped with a complete operational infrastructure, the Rio Grande do Sul-based port is considered the country's second most important hub for the development of Brazil’s international trade and cargo turnover. Ensuring that the port is always in line with international standards, the port is continuously undertaking infrastructure improvement initiatives.

One of the port’s largest private terminals, the Yara Terminal is also maintaining and improving its handling standards for fertilizers and liquids. To this end, BBC Chartering was contracted for the transport of two heavy mobile harbor cranes from Westdorpe, Netherlands and two hoppers loading in Gijon, Spain.

Successfully discharged in Rio Grande, all four pieces of heavy equipment were mobilized at once on board the BBC Moonstone, demonstrating BBC’s broad capabilities with regards to shipping extra-large and heavy cargo.

The procured BBC Moonstone is a 14,800dwt heavy lift vessel which features a lifting capacity of 800mt. BBC Chartering currently operates nine vessels of this type.
