Anti-Piracy Strategy

Piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean has been increasing dramatically in recent years, both in the frequency of attacks, and also in the sophistication of the pirates. There have been many news reports of hijackings on the open seas where cargo has been threatened or lost, and crew members have been held hostage. BBC has had several such instances, and of course we know of others suffered by our colleagues at other shipping companies; in one recent case a seaman was killed.
The constant threat of piracy is one that we take very seriously at BBC Chartering. The danger to our crew and to your cargo is quite real. You trust us to take good care of your cargo and to deliver it safely, and we value that trust. That is why we have invested in defensive security equipment for our vessels. Also, we have invested in additional crew training, to prepare them to deal with a pirate attack safely and effectively. Sometimes we also determine that the best approach is to avoid the areas of greatest danger, and so we have at times rerouted vessels.
The additional equipment and training, and the longer voyages that result from rerouting vessels, all of this costs money, not to mention the increase in insurance premiums we have seen lately. These costs are mounting, and we can no longer absorb them alone. We must begin passing on part of the cost of combating piracy to our customers, and we hope that you will understand. As of today, we will begin applying a Piracy Prevention Surcharge. The surcharge will be determined case by case, based on the cargo and the voyage.
Again, we hope that you will understand that these additional costs are necessary to safeguard not only cargo and the vessel, but lives as well.

BBC recognized as ´Best Breakbulk Carrier`

BBC Chartering was recognized as ‘Shipping Line of the year’ in the category ‘Break Bulk – Heavy Lift Operator’ at the first ever ‘All India Maritime and Logistics Awards 2010’ (MALA). The award is being organized by India’s leading shipping publication, EXIM India’s Fairplay Exposition Group. In more than 35 categories,  encompassing virtually all the segments of the maritime and logistics trade in the country, the award winners have been selected amongst a group of nearly 90 nominees. With this set-up, MALA 2010 can be seen as the most comprehensive acknowledgement of ‘excellence’ in the sector seen till date.

The winners have been chosen by an experienced and professional jury chaired by Mr. D. T. Joseph, former Shipping Secretary of India. Service-related data (for the period April 2009 to March 2010) of the nominees has been scrutinized, based on which 3 nominees were shortlisted in each category. They have then been assessed by the jury and the winners were chosen in a completely transparent process. Amongst the criteria used for evaluation were operational performance, efficiency parameters, service standards, infrastructure available, and customer satisfaction.

On September 30th, 2010, BBC’ Denis Bandura attended the award ceremony at the ‘Taj President Hotel’ in Mumbai and took reception of the MALA award in the category ‘best break-bulk / heavy lift operator’. Amongst other reputable price winners were ‘Allcargo’, ‘DP world’, ‘Transworld’ or ‘Distripak’, to mention a few. The Mala award represents the second industry recognition BBC received in 2010, after bagging the title ‘Best Breakbulk Carrier’ awarded by ‘Guia Maritimo’, the leading Latin American publishing house focusing on international trade.

BBC’s Svend Andersen says: “BBC Chartering has once again shown that its unique team of professionals is delivering not only to our high standards but to the expectations of our global clients. With this being the second major award in 2010, we can be proud of our global and local crew and say ‘thank you’ for the trust our global clientele puts into our abilities!”
